Storytelling Saturday #5: “Ching Chong, they chime along.”
Welcome back to Storytelling Saturday, where I share stories about my experiences as an international student and immigrant. A happy reminder to put away your suggestions when it wasn’t asked.

Now, something a bit different…
In 2011, Wallace was mad
so told YouTube that she hates Ching Chong,
and those from China shouldn’t belong
to the University where she learned yearlong.
I am Korean.
She’s not the first person to say Ching Chong
The name carries on from long-lost songs
Ching chong, Chinaman, the song chimes on
mortifying Asians since before dawn.
Again, I am Korean.
Hey there Chong Ching, he said to me
thinking it’d be funny to make fun of me (I think).
To achieve what, I’m not so sure
if he wanted a friend, why not say hello?
C’mon White man, get yourself together
It’s only two words you’ve got to remember
If you’re not going to be kind, at least be clever
Lest you make me glad that I’m not one of you ever.
But then again, I do understand, that
if you had the brains, you would’ve used it by then.
We never became friends, in case you wonder.
But do visit Chong Qing, it’s a beautiful place to wander.
