I was introduced to Journalistic Drawing /Urban Sketching by my fabulous teacher, Fred Lynch, in College. Drawings made me look a little less creepy when I sat at a corner and watched the world happen. It also has the remarkable ability for anyone to warm up to me and invite me into the world. Through drawing, I could observe the world and live in it at the same time.
Doing the drawing keeps me sharp and in tune with the present. It also helps me point out the ridiculousness of the now in my other illustrations. I continue to fit drawing wherever I can because I love finding the ‘delight’ in the mundane. Things people take for granted are fascinating for an outside observer like me. In particular, I draw moments of ‘serendipity,’ as superbly described by Horace Walpole.
“Serendipity: being able to make delightful discoveries purely by accident.”
Horace Walpole, 1754

Here, I did a drawing an hour to make a sketchbook-around-the-clock. A very busy day it was.
